National Healthy Schools Canteen Project


Flinders Partners and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Flinders University have won a $1.25m tender with Department of Health and Ageing to work on the National Healthy Schools Canteen Project. The Schools Canteen project is part of a four year national program launched by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), aiming to promote good health and reduce the burden of chronic diseases. The overall objective for the Canteen project is to develop a national food categorisation system, and training guidelines and resources, to assist school communities to make appropriate menu choices that encourage the development and reinforcement of healthy eating patterns in students. The Flinders University project team, while based in South Australia, will be generating an outcome that will be of value to the whole of Australia. The project will involve considerable professional and industry consultation, and as such, the project will provide a great opportunity for the state and Flinders University to showcase their research capabilities. Success with this project will enable Flinders University to further demonstrate their credibility nationally in the area of nutrition and dietetics, and place it among some of the top universities in this country in this area of research.  The project will commence in April 2008 and run over a period of 2 years.

The Flinders University collaboration on the The National Healthy Schools Canteen project will be a joint project between Flinders University Departments of Nutrition and Dietetics, Public Health and Social Health Sciences; Flinders Medical Centre Department of Dietetics and Nutrition; and Flinders Partners.
