Licensing Deal SA Health
Flinders Partners has successfully licensed IP developed by Professor Malcolm Battersby of Flinders Human Behaviour and Health Research Unit to SA Health. The deal which went through on 24th April, 2009 was for the Partners in Health (PIH) Scale, a resource developed as part of the “Flinders Program” of Chronic Condition Self Management (CCSM).
The Program enables clinicians and their patients to work together to develop individualised care plans to help patients better self-manage their chronic medical conditions. Research has shown that people who work in partnership with their doctor and other care providers usually enjoy better health and are more satisfied with the services they receive. The PIH Scale is a resource which helps to build this relationship.
The purpose of the PIH is for the person with chronic condition(s) to rate their self-management knowledge, actions and impacts. It is based on the 6 principles of self-management accepted as part of the national definition of self-management. The PIH is used as a screening tool to determine what patients know about their condition, what they do about it, what self-management barriers were present and what education might be required.
The Flinders Program is very well-respected in health circles; it is most exciting that the PIH Scale has now been licensed by SA Health for implementation here South Australia.
