"I find that working with both sectors ensures I am connected with those I need to collaborate with, keeps me in touch with current issues for those 'at the coal face and in policy' and keeps me well informed with what is generally happening regarding alcohol and drug issues in society. Interacting with these groups enables me to provide up-to-date information, resources and education, and to base research endeavour that is meaningful and can have practical application. In addition to this, my work with these groups allows me networking opportunities in which I can promote my research, other projects and develop new partnerships.
As with all working relationships, sometimes the process can be a little frustrating. Difference and issues pertaining to bureaucracy, administration and finances can at times cause problems, and can make the process time consuming. However, by incorporating good communication and interpersonal skills, and taking the time and effort to build and maintain relationships, trust between myself and relevant sectors develops and this is the platform for collaborative projects that can be funded and are worthwhile. Naturally I need the professional expertise and knowledge of Industry, know-how in formulating successful tenders and submissions, and financial and administrative systems, to ensure that projects I lead are well advised and managed, and this is where working with Flinders Partners has really helped make a difference."
